Former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey faces disciplinary action over handling of serial sex abuser John Smyth

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord George Carey of Clifton, 89, is facing disciplinary action by the Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team (NST) over his handling of serial sex abuser and pedophile John Smyth. The action follows a review of clergy named and criticized in the Makin Review and comes after the most recent Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, resigned in November 2024 over his own handling of the same offender.
