Media reports on handling of sex abuse priest lead to calls for Archbishop of York Most Rev. Stephen Cottrell to resign

The Archbishop of York, Most Rev. Stephen Cottrell, second highest ranking leader in the Anglican Communion, is facing calls to resign over his supervision of sex assault allegations involving a priest known for his charismatic preaching. The new debacle has emerged just weeks after Cottrell’s boss, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Rev. Justin Welby, resigned over his handling of a serial sex offender, the late John Smyth, in an unrelated case.

  • Why celebrate in such unsettling times?

For the fourth time since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we are celebrating the Word of God becoming flesh as angels proclaimed peace on earth. So where is the peace? The Christmas carols seem totally detached from today’s headlines, but they tend to sing about the outcome of God's promise, not the process.

  • A war on faith: a Ukrainian widow's resilience exposes Russian Orthodoxy's tyranny

Oleksandra was severely wounded and her immediate family killed in an attack on Kyiv while they lay sleeping. Through her rehabilitation she learned that true faith is the source of courage, resilience, and purpose. Meanwhile, leaders of the Russian Orthodox church are weaponizing their faith in support of the war, restricting religious freedom, and promoting a false narrative to the rest of the world.

  • We must engage enemies Jesus' way

These days we are constantly being asked to identify our enemies and stand up against them. That is the way of the world, not the way of Jesus. The Jews were expecting their enemies to be vanquished by the Messiah, yet Jesus offered the way of reconciliation through self-giving love. We must follow Jesus.
